I painted this series when I was homeless in New Mexico in the late 90s. I sometimes stayed at a friend's house when she went away. Each time I house sat for her, I'd do a new image. All of the images came to me in Dreams.
Since I barely had enough money to eat, I used old art materials I found at my friend's house, and painted on primed and gessoed scraps of wood from her scrap heap left over from her wood sculptures.
There's a custom in New Mexico of sacred art painted on wood called Retablos. I called these Tablitos because they were sacred to me, but didn't want to intersect with the established religious icons. I ally these more with the Goddess and nature.
